Cumberland United Methodist Church Rebuilds History

Print

Cumberland United Methodist Church is rebuilding an exact replica of its historic sanctuary located at 163 South Coit Street. The layout of the site is in conformance with the original layout when the sanctuary was first built in 1913.

The sanctuary was demolished the latter part of 2005 due to irreparable moisture and termite damage.   Due to the severity of damage, the project team proceeded with a complete demolition of the sanctuary and a plan to rebuild based on the original structure's historic architecture.

Salvaged materials will be used where possible.   For instance, the original stained glass windows, pews, and pipe organ will be restored and reinstalled.   Also, the hand-molded brick from the historic structure has been salvaged and will be re-used as brick veneer.   The Bell Tower foundation and wall structure will be designed and constructed to receive a vertical steeple similar to the 1913 design.

Located in the Downtown Central District (D-2), the plan for the project reconstruction was approved by the Design Review Board at a public hearing on August 9, 2006.
